***ADOPTIONS UPDATE***
HSCC is currently open to the public, including visitors. You do not need an appointment to come in to adopt.
- Please come prepared to take your new pet home. Cats must leave in a carrier. Dogs must leave with a collar and leash. Small animals must leave in a carrier. All of these items are available for purchase at HSCC.
- All adopters are "first come, first served". In order to be considered first for an animal, you must be present in person, have a completed adopter profile, and alert a staff member that you are interested in adopting. Holds cannot be placed until a prospective adopter has completed the full counseling process. You must have a photo ID to adopt and be at least 18 years old. If you live in student housing, you must have proof of permission to have a pet from Residential life.
- All HSCC dogs are now available for Foster-To-Adopt*, which allows you to take the dog home for a one-week trial period before committing to adoption. After one week, an HSCC staff member will check in to see how things are going and talk through next steps. If the dog is not a good match for your home, we can set up a time for you to bring them back to HSCC; if your trial period is going well and you would like to adopt, we can help you finalize your adoption remotely or in-shelter. Please call (802) 862-0135 or email bestfriends@hsccvt.org with any questions about our Foster-To-Adopt program!
*Available for Vermont residents only

Since 1901, Humane Society of Chittenden County has united once-homeless pets with loving and committed adopters. When you adopt an animal from HSCC, not only will you be sure that your pet is a good match for you and your family, but you will also know you have helped to make an impact on the humane treatment of animals in Chittenden and Grand Isle counties.
Thank you for choosing to adopt! We're honored to be your resource for pet companionship!

Who's the genius behind the gorgeous animal photos on our site?

donate her services, time, and talent to HSCC!
Do you have an HSCC Alum? You can purchase that wonderful headshot of your new friend that appeared on our website! Kelly Schulze of Mountain Dog Photography takes several photos of each animal, and can offer you the entire selection to choose from. Simply email Kelly with the animal's name, species, color and approximate adoption date (ex. Winter 2015). 20% of all proceeds from your purchase is donated to HSCC.
